Cold outreach: why you are the 41st caller (and how to do it differently)

Your prospect gets called 40 times a week. Why would they listen to you? Discover how to go from cold to warm, without chasing.

In het kort
  • Your prospect gets called forty times a week; you are the forty-first interruption.
  • Reverse the order: warm up the contact with content and education before the conversation begins.
  • Work that way and you are never the cold caller, but the one the customer comes to of their own accord.

A sales professional with thirty years of experience put it strikingly to me recently: "My clients tell me: I already get called forty times a week, and you are the forty-first." That is the reality of cold outreach today. You are not competing with your competitor, you are competing with forty other interruptions.

Is cold outreach dead?

Does that mean outreach is dead? No. But the order has been reversed. The conversation used to start cold and it was your job to warm it up with a pitch. Now the contact needs to be warm before the conversation begins. And you have more influence over that than you think.

How to go from cold to warm

Look at the funnel the way I draw it. At the top sits cold: people who do not know you yet. You do not warm them up by calling, you warm them up with content and education. Sharing knowledge, offering insights, showing how you think. Then comes warm: people who already know you, follow your story, read your book or attended a webinar. And only then comes the action: the conversation, the appointment. Work in that order and you are never the forty-first caller. You are the one the customer comes to of their own accord, or the one who calls and is already recognised.

The million dollar question

And when someone comes to you? Then you have the finest opening question in the trade at your disposal. I call it the million dollar question: "Where does your interest come from?" The answer tells you exactly what is going on and why now. From that moment on, all you have to do is help honestly.

Cold outreach without a big marketing budget

Does this also work without a big marketing budget? Especially then. One good article, one webinar, one clear story on LinkedIn does more than a hundred cold calls, because it keeps working while you sleep. And every customer you then turn into a fan becomes a source of warm introductions themselves. That is how the funnel is meant to run: education at the top, fans at the bottom, and less and less cold in between.

You are not competing with your competitor, you are competing with forty other interruptions.
