From consultant to sales: how to make the switch in a relaxed way
You are good at your craft and now something commercial is expected of you too. Discover how to make the switch from consultant to sales without losing yourself.
- The switch is smaller than it feels: listening, probing and building trust through expertise are exactly the skills of modern sales.
- Move from what can I sell here to how can I best help this customer, and the dynamic of every conversation changes.
- What usually does need to be added: turning around your beliefs about selling, and a light process so opportunities do not evaporate.

It happens to many good consultants: you have grown in your craft, and suddenly a commercial responsibility comes with it. Targets, new business, "just thinking along about the expansion at that client". And that grates. You became an advisor to help, not to sell. That switch took some getting used to, I often hear.
Why the switch from consultant to sales is smaller than you think
The good news: you do not have to become a different person. The skills that make you a good consultant are exactly the skills of modern sales. Listening. Asking deeper questions. Getting to the real problem. Building trust through expertise. The most successful professionals I know see themselves as helpers. That sounds like a play on words. Yet it makes a real difference: the moment you flip the switch from "what can I sell here" to "how can I best help this customer", the entire dynamic of every conversation changes.
Beliefs and structure make the difference
What usually does need to be added are two things. First, your beliefs. If deep down you feel that selling is something dirty, you sabotage yourself. Turn it around: giving more customers the benefit of your advice is helping. The price you ask matches the value you deliver. Second, structure. As a consultant the work was handed to you, now you have to guard the customer's journey yourself: from first contact to follow-up to expansion. A light, clear process keeps opportunities from evaporating, and actually gives you the calm to stay personal.
Let go of the pressure
And let go of the pressure. Focus on the process, and the result follows. What you sow this month, you harvest a quarter from now. Anyone who understands that can go into every conversation relaxed.
What can you do tomorrow? Pick one customer you already know and ask: what are you running into at the moment? Listen, and sell nothing. Want to see where you stand first? Take the free scan. And if you want to make the switch together with colleagues, that is what the Sales Excellence Training is for, online or in person.
