Selling as an introvert: you do not need to be a talker

The myth of the born salesperson holds introverted professionals back. Nonsense: the best advisors are precisely the best listeners. Discover why.

  • The born salesperson does not exist: selling is a skill you train, not a talent you are born with.
  • As an introvert you actually have a head start, because a good customer conversation is eighty percent listening, probing and summarising.
  • What usually gets in the way is the belief that selling does not suit you; see yourself not as a salesperson but as the helpful expert you already are.
Selling as an introvert: you do not need to be a talker | Klaas Kroezen, honest and relaxed

"Oh, I am just not a born salesperson." I hear it so often, usually from calm, thoughtful people who have declared themselves unsuited to sales. So let me say it straight away: the born salesperson does not exist. Selling is not a magical talent you are given at birth. It is a skill, a muscle anyone can train, as long as you go about it authentically.

Why you have an advantage as an introvert

In fact, as an introvert you have an advantage. The myth says you have to be the loudest, extraverted, someone who can talk people round. Nothing could be further from the truth. Over my career I have trained countless people, from the most introverted specialists to the biggest networking tigers, and my experience shows time and again: the very best advisors are the best listeners. The most empathetic people. The most honest experts. They are good at connecting. And the inner conviction that you want to help works far better than the volume of your voice.

A good sales conversation is mostly listening

Look at what a good customer conversation actually asks of you. The eighty-twenty rule: eighty percent listening, twenty percent talking. Asking open questions and then really hearing what is said. Probing for the impact. Summarising and checking whether you understand it correctly. Daring to let silences fall. Those are not extraverted skills. Those are your skills.

Reframe the belief that selling is not for you

The only thing that often gets in the way is the belief that selling is not for you. And beliefs can be reframed. Do not see yourself as a salesperson, but as the helpful expert you already are. Selling then simply becomes the natural result of helping well.

Try it in your next conversation: let the other person do most of the talking, and dare to let a silence fall. Notice what happens. If that belief still gets in your way, read how to reframe your beliefs. Want to learn it at your own pace, in your own way? You can, with the online Sales Excellence Training.

Veelgestelde vragen

Can you sell if you are an introvert?

Yes, and often better than the smooth talker. A good customer conversation is eighty percent listening, probing and summarising, and those are exactly the strengths of many introverted experts.

Do you have to be extroverted to be good at sales?

No. The born salesperson does not exist; selling is a skill you train. The best advisers are usually the best listeners and the most empathetic people, not the loudest speakers.

What holds introverted professionals back in sales?

Usually not their skills but the belief that selling does not suit them. Once you stop seeing yourself as a salesperson and start seeing the helpful expert you already are, that blocker falls away.
