Honest selling: what it is and why it pays off more, an element of the Customer Experience Model by Klaas Kroezen

Honest selling means you genuinely care about the customer. Not about the deal, but about the puzzle you solve together. It sounds obvious, but it is the opposite of how most of us learned to sell: persuade, pitch, look for the hook to offload your product.

Why honest selling works so much better

Why does honest work so much better? Because customers have a sixth sense. Within a few minutes they feel whether you are genuinely interested in their story, or whether you are quietly trying to flog your product. Those signals cannot be faked. They come from your intention, and you radiate it whether you want to or not. If the honest intention is missing, the deal is often doomed before you have said a word.

From selling to helping

The switch is small and enormous at the same time: from selling to helping. The moment you stop seeing yourself as a salesperson and start seeing yourself as a helper, the whole dynamic changes. You do not open your conversation with what you sell, but with who the customer is. What is going on, what is the real challenge, what would the ideal outcome be? You are not selling a drill, you are selling the perfect hole in the wall and the pride when that photo is finally up.

Listening is your most important tool

The concrete tool of honest selling is listening. I like to work by the eighty-twenty rule: listen eighty per cent of the time, talk twenty. Ask open questions that draw out a story, not questions that get you a yes or a no. Dig into the impact. And summarise what you hear, so the customer feels genuinely understood. Most people do not listen to understand, but to reply. Flip that switch, and you become the trusted advisor at once.

And no, this is not soft. An entrepreneur I worked with went from one or two customers per ten leads to seven or eight. Not by pushing harder. By being genuinely interested.

Honest is the first of the six elements of the Customer Experience Model, together with relaxed the core attitude beneath all the skills.
